Hair Losing Its Shine With Age? Partial Japanese Hair Straightening & Hair Treatment in Harajuku, Tokyo
Hello, I’m Sachi, an English-speaking hairstylist at Moana Malie Hair in Harajuku, Tokyo.
I specialize in curly and wavy hair, Japanese hair straightening, hair improvement treatments, and personalized haircuts for both Japanese and international clients.
My salon is located near Harajuku Station and Meiji-jingumae Station, just a short walk from Meiji Jingu Shrine.
Recently, I had a little free time between appointments, so I went for a walk and visited Meiji Jingu.
Even though it is so close to my salon, I realized it had been quite a while since my last visit.
I have always loved Meiji Jingu.
Harajuku is one of the busiest areas in Tokyo, but once you enter the forest surrounding the shrine, the atmosphere completely changes.
It feels calm, peaceful and full of nature.
It is one of my favorite places to reset my mind in the middle of the city.
Today, I would like to introduce a recent client who came to me for a partial straightening treatment to improve shine and manageability.
“My Hair Isn’t Very Curly, but It Has Lost Its Shine”
My client, Emi, was visiting my salon for the first time.
I had met her several times before through a community we are both part of, and I had always thought she had a short bob haircut.
But when she came to the salon, I discovered that she actually had long hair with many high layers.
She usually tucked and pinned the longer sections underneath to make her hair look like a bob.

During our consultation, she told me:
“My hair isn’t extremely curly, but as I’ve gotten older, I feel like it has lost its shine.”
This is actually a very common concern among my clients.
Many women tell me:
“My hair used to be much shinier.”
“My hair has become frizzy or fluffy with age.”
“Even when I apply hair oil, it still looks dry.”
“My hair texture seems different from a few years ago.”
Hair can change with age, hormonal changes, accumulated chemical damage, heat styling and many other factors.
And when hair begins to lose its shine, simply applying more oil or doing more surface-level treatments is not always the answer.
Why Does Hair Lose Its Shine?
There are many possible reasons, but I often see three main causes.
- Damage from hair color, perms or heat styling
- Hair that has difficulty maintaining a healthy balance of moisture and oils
- Curly or wavy hair that reflects light unevenly
Sometimes only one of these is present.
Very often, however, several of them occur at the same time.
1. Hair Damage
Hair coloring, bleaching, perms, daily flat ironing and improper hair care can gradually damage the hair.
When the outer surface of the hair becomes rough or uneven, light cannot reflect smoothly from it.
As a result, the hair can appear dull, dry or frizzy.
This is why even naturally straight hair can lose its shine when it becomes damaged.
2. Hair That Feels Dry, Fluffy or Frizzy
Some hair types naturally tend to feel lighter, drier or more porous.
Damage can also make hair behave this way.
You may notice:
- fluffy or “puffy” hair
- frizz around the surface
- hair that reacts strongly to humidity
- hair that feels dry even after using oil
- hair oil that seems to sit on the surface instead of blending into the hair
- shine disappearing soon after styling
I see this frequently in clients with curly hair and wavy hair.
Many people try to solve the problem by applying more and more hair oil.
But if the condition of the hair itself is not balanced, adding more oil does not necessarily make it healthier or shinier.
Sometimes it simply makes the hair feel heavy or greasy while the underlying dryness remains.
Hair Treatment Should Be More Than Temporary Shine
Many salon treatments make hair feel extremely smooth and shiny immediately after the service.
And of course, beautiful texture and shine are important.
However, at Moana Malie Hair, I also look at what is happening underneath that immediate surface appearance.
Why does the hair feel dry?
Why is it becoming frizzy?
Why does the shine disappear quickly?
Why does the client need to apply so much product every morning?
I like to compare hair treatment to repairing a house.
Imagine that a house is beginning to lean.
You could repaint the walls and repair the roof, and the house might look beautiful from the outside.
But if the foundation or structural supports are damaged, the real problem has not been solved.
Hair can be similar.
Simply coating the outside to make it temporarily smooth does not always address the condition causing the problem.
This is why my hair improvement treatments focus on choosing the right approach for each client instead of using the same treatment on everyone.
Curly or Wavy Hair Does Not Always Need Full Straightening
Another important cause of dull-looking hair is texture.
When hair is curly, wavy or slightly uneven, light reflects in many different directions.
Because of this, curly or wavy hair may not show the same “halo shine” that very straight hair does, even when the hair itself is relatively healthy.
Emi had both slight dryness and some natural movement in her hair.
For her, I did not recommend straightening everything.
Her haircut had many high layers and a beautiful long wolf-style shape.
If I had completely straightened her hair and removed too much volume, we could have lost the movement and character of her haircut.
Instead, I recommended a partial Japanese hair straightening treatment only on the upper section where she wanted more shine and smoothness.
That allowed us to improve the appearance of the surface while keeping the movement and volume in the rest of her hairstyle.
Partial Japanese Hair Straightening Can Make a Big Difference
Japanese hair straightening does not always mean making every strand completely straight.
Sometimes only one section needs treatment.
For example:
- the top layer that looks frizzy
- the hair around the face
- bangs that become wavy in humidity
- sections that puff up more than the rest
- areas where you want more shine
A partial straightening service can be a very good option for clients who want to keep some of their natural texture.
In Emi’s case, we only treated the areas that needed more smoothness.
She already has a trusted hairstylist in her hometown of Nagoya, so I did not cut her hair during this appointment.
We only performed the partial straightening treatment.
Even without changing the haircut, smoothing the top surface made the entire hairstyle look more polished and shiny.
She was very happy with the result.

Should You Choose Hair Straightening or a Hair Improvement Treatment?
If you are experiencing:
“My hair is not very curly, but it always looks frizzy.”
“My hair has become fluffy as I get older.”
“My hair oil only works for a few hours.”
“My hair treatment feels good at first, but the effect disappears quickly.”
“I want more shine, but I do not want completely straight hair.”
then the first step is understanding why your hair looks the way it does.
You may need a hair improvement treatment.
You may benefit from Japanese hair straightening.
Or you may only need partial straightening in certain areas.
There is no single treatment that is correct for everyone.
That is why consultation is so important.
